Real-time Driving Behavior Profiling Using UTDrive-MOBILE-App

Instrumented vehicles and mobile devices with sensors have been used to gather driving behavior data and these data will be taken back to lab and analyze offline. A main challenge here is that analysis can not be completed in real-time and obtain a detailed understanding of a driver’s behavior. This project developed an advanced driving behavior modeling application that combines driving behavior, traffic conditions, and driver psychology which are expected to improve the understanding of driver behavior from both micro and macro views in real-time.

UTDrive-MOBILE-App is developed with Android devices using Android Studio. With the widely used devices and development tools, the application can be user-friendly and gather naturalistic driving behavior data which can help us construct the driving behavior model and explore its potential for future driving behavior prediction projects.

Participants complete 4 test drives in a given test drive route. They drive normally in two of these experiments. For the rest two experiments, one is required to drive in neutral style and another one is required to drive in aggressive style. With these four experiments, we can verify the application works as expected, as well as understand the consistency of drivers’ driving behavior. The above figure shows the example of our real-time data visualization of a driver’s behavior which provides us a comprehensive understanding within the mobile devices.
